Ιωάννης του Νεπομούκ | Jan Nepomucký

The martyrdom of St. John Nepomuceno

The martyrdom of St. John Nepomuceno

[ENG] Bishop Jan Nepomucký (John of Nepomuk) was found drowned in the waters of the river Vltava of Prague on March 20, 1393, during the reign of the German "King of the Romans" Václav IV (Wenceslaus). Wenceslaus was originally married to Johana Bavorská (Joanna of Bavaria) and when she died, in 1386, he married his cousin Žofie Bavorská (Sofia of Bavaria). As it was then common, the Queen's confessor was the bishop himself, who, in the case of Sophia, was John of Nepomuk... In 1393 the jealous Wenceslaus suspected that his wife was cheating on him... He demanded, therefore, from the bishop to reveal what his wife told him during the confession... John of Nepomuk did not want to betray the secrets of the confession and Wenceslaus tortured him until death... After, he threw the body of the bishop in the river Vltava of Prague. The Catholic Church named John of Nepomuk a Saint... He is the patron saint of Prague, and, probably because of how he died, patron saint against the floods... There are several stories relating to the torture Saint John Nepomuk suffered and for his death... According to one of them, the Saint, after being tortured by Wenceslaus, promised to the kinged to tell the secret to a living soul... The saint bent down and said the secret to the dog of King... According to another legend, after the death of the priest drought followed and the lever of the waters of the river fall a lot. Rays of light appeared above the water. People searched where exactly they saw the lights and they discovered the body of the priest. In Prague, a statue of the saint is on the Karlův most (Charles Bridge)... The tradition says that touching the saint in the pictures at the base of the statue brings to the person good luck... A Beautiful complex of St. John of Nepomuk exists on Ostrow Tumski (Island of the Cathedral), in the Polish city Wrocław.
